The two owners met back in 1997 while working on a project in their second year of architecture school studio class. Throughout the rigorous architecture curriculum, they grew to respect each other’s designs, work ethic, and drive. They studied in Rome together, traveled and sketched throughout Europe and the US, eventually married, and dreamed of one day opening their own business.

Upon graduating in 2001, with a desire to live in the Midwest, to live in a larger city, and to be surrounded by a thriving artistic community, Marcy and James made the leap of faith to move to Minneapolis, Minnesota. In early 2009 Conrad + Nutt Studio, Ltd. was established.

Marcy Conrad Nutt

Marcy grew up in a small town in southwest Missouri and attended the Fay Jones School of Architecture in the beautiful mountains of northwest Arkansas. During school, she was an intern for two summers at Butler, Rosenbury & Partners in Springfield, Missouri and for one summer at Perry Butcher’s office in Rogers, Arkansas, where she worked on retail, ecclesiastical, and historic preservation/reuse projects. In 2001 Marcy graduated summa cum laude and moved to Minneapolis, where she joined the up and coming architecture firm of James Dayton Design. Within a year of joining the firm, she was entrusted with her own single and multi-family residential projects. A few years later, she successfully managed the critically acclaimed MacPhail Center for Music building project in downtown Minneapolis. After almost seven years in James Dayton’s office, Marcy joined the nationally renowned firm, SmithGroup, where she focused on sustainability issues and designed successful office environments. In 2009, James and Marcy began Conrad + Nutt Studio.

What Marcy truly enjoys about the profession of architecture is the balance and combination of extreme practicality, building tectonics, and art involved. She is engaged in her community through advocacy work for increasing affordable housing and ending homelessness initiatives. She served for five years on a committee of joint faith communities which saved and revitalized a below market rate apartment and built a new supportive housing project for homeless and former foster care youth. She has also lead a relief volunteer construction crew to Biloxi, Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina, has built homes through various affordable housing groups, and enjoys tinkering with her own home when time allows.

She is a registered architect in the state of Minnesota, and a LEED accredited professional. Membership affiliations include AIA, ALA, NCARB, the University of Arkansas Alumni, and she has participated in the University of Minnesota School of Architecture mentorship program.

James Nutt

James grew up in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, and was constantly drawing and designing as a child. During Desert Storm he enlisted in the Air Force and served four years in the Civil Engineer squadron as an electrician. He developed a love and knowledge of buildings by working in and with the building trades. Architecture became the obvious next step. During school, multiple internship opportunities included ecclesiastic architecture with Elton Roe Architect, running a small prefab residential design and fabrication department for a light-gauge metal framing manufacturer, and various projects with the architect Albert Skiles. In 2001 James graduated cum laude from the Fay Jones School of Architecture. Immediately upon graduation, James and Marcy relocated to Minneapolis where James worked with the highly regarded firm of Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle. After three years, an important mentor coaxed him to join the construction/development business of Ryan Companies, to help revitalize their design-build architecture department. Since that time James has designed and lead 30+ projects, of which some have won local and national awards, as a senior design architect. In 2009 James and Marcy began Conrad + Nutt Studio.

James is a people person at his core and has a strong commitment to community, civic responsibility, and social justice. He volunteers regularly through teaching and mentoring, has lead relief volunteer construction crews (to include Biloxi and New Orleans), currently serves on various building committees, and has served as an elder of his church. James is currently a Boardman on the Minneapolis Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Using Our Resources Wisely

We strive to have a healthy and environmentally conscious work environment where:

All copy paper purchased contains high post-consumer content.

Recycle all in-house printer ink cartridges.

Heavy reuse of binders and other office supplies. (We’ve found old college binders we are still reusing!)

Heavy use of PDFs, backup cloud, and hard drive storage for less hard copy paper waste.

Recycling of all products allowed by the City of Minneapolis, with additional plastic recycling through our local co-op.

All unused samples to be returned to product representatives for recycling, reuse, or donation.

Lighting in the office is compact fluorescent…except for the one halogen light that’s still kicking.

Zero use of disposable plastic water bottles.

Environmentally friendly cleaners.

Caring for Our Community

The partners of Conrad + Nutt Studio believe that giving back, at a civic and community level, is a business and personal responsibility. Please see our individual profiles under the “About Us” for more detail on the ways we have volunteered.

From Our Clients

“When my wife and I approached Marcy and James with our project, we were worried they might think we were a little nuts. Our dream is to build a cool, well-thought-out, energy efficient home on a strict budget. Thankfully, they didn't bat an eyelash, and accepted the challenge with nothing but an awesomely positive attitude. We've had a lot of fun working with them, and have been repeatedly impressed with their willingness to listen to every idea, goal and concern that we've been able to throw at them. They've really made us feel like we are important partners in the design process. We are confident that we will have a wonderful, affordable home that doesn't feel cheap thanks to C+N's combination of creativity and technical knowledge.”

"Marcy made many suggestions and came up with creative solutions to tough problems. We remodeled the stairwell and attic of our small house. The change to the stairwell presented a tricky problem because it was a tight fit. A couple of other contractors we talked to for bids basically said it could not be done without an addition or sacrificing too much space in the ceiling of the first floor below the stairs. Marcy not only came up with the idea of using winder stairs to solve the problem, but she squeezed out every inch of space available in order to pass city inspection."
